Local History
Dolcedo is the main village of the Prino Valley, spread either side of the River Prino. Nearly all of the buildings date from the 16th Century or earlier. The Ponte Grande or "Big Bridge" was built by the Knights of Malta in 1292.
The parish church of San Tommaso, which dominates the village, was built in 1320 and later transformed in 1738 to its current beautiful state. The village was owned by the Marquis of Clavesana until 1228, at which times the rights of the village passed to the city of Genoa. The village was later granted independance in 1613.
This rural village has thrived, initially due to the production of a strong cloth called "arabaxo" or "arbasino" made from raw wool. More recently, the rural focus has been on production of the highest quality Olives and Olive oil.
